Camera Shy? | srichardsonphotos.com

Updated: Jul 4, 2022

Let's talk about it. As a portrait photographer, I've come across quite a few people who have major anxiety around having their portraits taken. Whether it's camera shyness or just plain ol' hate, I've encountered people who have an aversion to being in front of the camera. If you're one of those people, I have 3 major tips for you.

Tip #1: Know your triggers and tell your photographer If you're not a model or celebrity who's been trained to be in front of the camera, having your portraits taken can seem like a daunting experience. You may ask yourself, "How will I look?", "Is this my good side?", or "Will the camera show those 10lbs I gained over the holidays?" Yikes! We can truly be our own worst critic. However, communicating these triggers and photo fears prior to the start of your session will help your photographer alleviate them.

Tip #2: Don't force it. Relax, my lovelies. I assure you, nothing comes off more awkward in portraits than a forced smile or pose. In the hands of a professional photographer, your portrait experience should be nice and comfortable. My clients talk with me and discuss their vision weeks ahead of their session, so there is a sense of ease they experience on portrait day. We have fun on set, listen to their favorite music, have refreshments, and sip champagne (if they like). The tension fades into nothingness by the time we're done and the poses and smiles are 100% natural.

Tip #3: Prepare, prepare, prepare! Don't know what to expect? Don't know what to bring? Like most aspects in our lives, a little planning goes a long way. Taking the surprises out of the session with some forethought can reduce session day anxiety tremendously. I provide my clients with a welcome guide filled with everything they need to know and bring with them to have a beautiful luxe experience. I do all the hard work so you don't have to. Until next time,
